Monday Sept. 27th - Mitros

Well we have started our tour around the island of Crete.  We left yesterday morning from the town we are living in, Petras, just outside of Sitia.  Our first stop was Vai Beach.  It is apparently one of the nicest beaches on Crete.  The beach was nice, had lots of palm trees, but we thought the beach in Sitia was just as good.  We spent one or two hours there, then we hit the road again.  We drove to a place called Kato Zakros.  It is a bunch of restaurants on a strip along the beach.  It is cute, but very touristy.  For this tour we are looking to find small little towns/villages that are not overtouristy, if that is a word.  We only drove through Zakros, didn't stop.  Wyatt had an upset tummy and thought he was going to be carsick, so we turned down a road that an arrow pointed to a beach.  I am not sure of what the village was called.  We went down this one road that was barely wide enough to get our vehicle down.  We have rented a Fiat Dobplo, so it isn't very big.  We literally had about 1 -2 inches clearance on either side of the vehicle.  It was interesting.  To top it off we had an older lady behind us wanting to go faster than what we were going.  So when we got through there we turned off to a parking area.  There was a church, olive groves and a trail to a gorge.  The older lady pulled off fast into the olive grove, shut her car down and cranked her music super loud.  It was funny.  Anyways, I took Wyatt out of the car and we walked down the trail to the gorge for a bit.  Then we turned around and got in the car.  He was fine after all.  I am a bit paranoid as Wyatt got sick as we were on a bus ride from Iraklion to Sitia.
Our next stop was a town called Xerokambos.  We found a spot by the beach, it was nice. So we got some food and took it back to our place, had dinner.  After dinner we took the kids for a walk/run on the beach.  Then off to bed.
The next day we hit the road and stopped at a place called Perivolakis Gorge.  We put Lydia in the backpack and hiked up the gorge.  I didn't go all the way with Lydia as she got scared of the height.  So Lydia and I headed back to the car and rehydrated.  Clay and Wyatt went almost all the way, but turned around.  It was really really hot today.
After that we hit the road again in a town called Makrigialos.  It was nice a small.  We got set up on a beach, and stayed for a few hours.  Clay walked the strip to get us some cold drinks, and came across a fellow Canadian.  This lady owned a restaurant with her husband and they were from Edmonton.  So we chatted with her for a bit.   Wyatt has become quite the brave swimmer.  Him and Clay go swimming in the water with the big waves.  It scares me, but Wyatt loves it.
We left there and drove to this town we are in now, Mirtos.  The lady from Edmonton recommended it.  So here we are.  We have walked around the small town and taken a lot of photos.  It now is 8:30pm our time, and we are just sitting down to eat dinner.  The kids have found some other kids to run up and down the strip with.  So that will tire them out, hopefully.
